When Google introduced GMail, people just went crazy. More and more people signed up every day, even switched their mail accounts to Gmail and even popularized the phrase “gmail it” (not email it), because they loved the new concept of message threading and other features (AJAX to be specific). Last year, Google promised that it will never stop increasing space. To prove it, they added a counter on their main page that increases every second.
So the question is when will it reach 4 GB?
Let’s learn few facts before we begin:
- The current rate of increase is at an average of 4 bytes per second
- Our goal is 4 GB (4,29,49,67,296 bytes)
- The current size is 2.7 GB (2,71,05,41,252 bytes as of 16:28 IST, April 03, 2006)
Now, we’re ready to do some basic math:
4 bytes / sec => 240 bytes / min => 14400 bytes / hr => 345600 bytes / day.
If our goal is 4 GB and we’re going at a rate of 345600 bytes / day, it would take:X days = 4,29,49,67,296 / 345,600 bytes= 12427.56740 days => ~34.081 years to go from 1 byte to 4 gigabytes.
Ok, now we’re already at 2,71,05,41,252 bytes as of 16:28 IST, April 03, 2006. We’re now 1584426044 bytes (1511.02642 MB) away from our 4 GB goal. So, let’s count how many days are left for GMail to become 4 GB.
X days = 528,081,272 / 345,600 bytes = 4584.5660 days => 12.56 years
Did you see that? It will take Google approximately 12 YEARS from today to give us 4 GB of space. That means… Google will reach 4 GB by 2018.
Note: The numbers might change depending on the demand, but the rate (4 bytes / sec) we’re going at now, it’ll take 12 years. Just to make things clear, I am not downsizing Google or it’s products (I love Gmail & the Google search engine), but I just wanted to make you aware of the number-game that Google is playing with us.

good post!!!!!
keep on posting more
I hope the next post comes soon!!
kya bhai.. 4 GB kitne bhi saalon mein pahuche.. point ye hai ki have u filled up the 2.7 GB that is avaliable now ????
baat woh nahi hai... ke 2.7 gb fill hua hai ke nahi....
baat yeh hai ke google wants itself to be talk of town and it has succeeded also by applying such a out-of-mind thinking...
